October Meeting Report
This month’s meeting was unusual in that we did not have a speaker. Instead, after updates about future group meetings and activities, members spent the remaining time before the coffee and cake break in wrapping and filling shoeboxes with presents for the YMCA Christmas appeal for young people who are unable to live at home, managing to complete 50 of them.
The creativity didn’t end there – after the break everyone made miniature Christmas tree decorations from ribbon and beads. Once the major challenges of threading the needle, and keeping the thread through the eye, were overcome, little trees in jewel colours came to life. Members enjoyed the extended opportunity to talk to each other which the evening provided, and many hope to make more of the ribbon trees at home.
We are not just a creative WI, we are also competitive, and we have been on a winning streak recently, with two triumphs in quick succession. The first win was at the Tone Valley Group of WIs meeting in Wiveliscombe on 4 October when a poem written by Chris Tron, a member of one of our writing groups, was chosen as the judge’s favourite. This was followed on 18 October by our team’s success in the final of the County fun quiz, following simultaneous heats in July in twelve locations across the County. We now have a very nice rose bowl and certificate to keep the poetry trophy company.
