Our 2nd Birthday
We are now two years old, so to help us celebrate, magician and illusionist Mark Herrick came to talk to us about his career and to show us a few tricks. This enabled Hannah, one of our members, to fulfil a long-held ambition to be a magician’s assistant, although she looked a little wary as he upturned a cup of water over her head. Fortunately Mark’s magic had worked and no water came out. (Water was a bit of a theme for the evening – Mark was very smartly dressed in evening wear, and, consequently, mistaken for a waiter by one of our members when he arrived, who asked him to get her two glasses of water!).
Another highlight of the meeting was the arrival of copies of ‘Monumental Women’s Ink’ – a book of writings from the Creative Writing Group. Contents include items on a wide range of topics, including, but not limited to, complete stories in 100 words, short stories about what would happen if the internet became unavailable, poems about pets, items which create an atmosphere of fear, and, naturally, some adult-only content.
Proceeds from sales will go to the Beacon Centre at Musgrove Park Hospital. Copies cost £4 and can be obtained from Bridget Hodges – [email protected]
We always have a session of ‘members’ time’ at meetings, and this month’s activity involved us finding out things about each other which make us unique. We are truly ‘monumental women’ – among our members are women who have cooked for the Queen, circumnavigated the coast of the British Isles in a sailing boat, worked for Greenpeace, been a contortionist in a circus, been a Mayor three times, and played in a samba band for the House of Commons staff.
Our next meeting will take place at the Beambridge Hotel on February 19th 7.00 for 7.30 pm, when the speaker will be a hat maker.
