Professional Belly Dancing
Professional Belly Dancing

There was a whole lot of hip shaking going on at the Beambridge last week, as members enthusiastically responded to the invitation to join in with Shema, a professional belly dancer, and try out some of the moves. Shema has studied this dance form and its many different styles for more than a decade, including two years living with a Bedouin tribe, learning about their particular version, and how it fits into the life of their community. She gave a demonstration of the different forms found in those countries in which this is an important activity, and illustrated that true belly dancing is really not at all like its media portrayal of scanty clothes and cleavage.

After the coffee break we relived our childhoods with a lively beetle drive, and voted for one of the limericks on the subject of ‘our bodies’ written by members of the writing group, to be entered into a competition at the Tone Valley Group of WIs social evening next week.

The interest groups reported on their activities. The cinema group had enjoyed Suffragettes at the Wellesley, the Book Group is reading Truth and other lies by Sascha Arango, and has two books to choose from for next month’s meeting, which will be a Christmas meal and planning session as well as the chance to discuss the books.

The quiz team came second after a tie break at the Beambridge quiz, and will take part in the World’s End quiz on 4 November. As well as writing limericks, the two writing groups continue to seek inspiration for their short stories to enter in the competition being run by the Purbeck Literary Festival, and writing about themselves.

At next month’s meeting, on 19 November at the Beambridge, the Wellington flower arrangers will demonstrate Christmas floral arrangements and members will be able to create one for themselves to take home. Visitors are very welcome, please come and join us at 7.00 pm.
